Today we set off for Richmond after yet another invigorating rajio taiso (morning exercise). First up on the menu was Maymont Park's Japanese garden, in which we were able to absorb the gorgeous nature surrounding us. Next up on the chopping block, we had the VMFA, granting us a greater appreciation of Japanese art. Following the museum, we satisfied our appetite for a shopping spree at Tokyo Market and Carytown. Finishing off our fulfilling trip, we were able to gorge ourselves on an immense and delectable meal at Sticky Rice. Ending off the night, we were able to rest easy with a stomach full of shared memories!

Beginning with the daily rajio taiso, morning exercises, we then headed straight to our nutritious breakfast which was followed by the AM morning class. A collaboration effort led by the students themselves for the future Undoukai sports festival quickly followed suit. After reviewing the previous sessions, we had the opportunity to introduce ourselves to the Latin Academy, working together in some cooperative skits that showed the individuality of their respective languages. After dinner, our two class teams, the Red Team and White Team worked diligently to prepare more for Undoukai. Lastly, we ended with a nightly meeting where we learned gourei, the proper way to welcome and thank guests, and prepared for the field trip tomorrow!
Starting the morning off strong with rajio taiso morning workouts for the very first time, Academy '25 students found ourselves feeling refreshed and ready for the day! After breakfast, the RA’s introduced Survival Japanese 101, and the students demonstrated their newfound knowledge through captivating, self-written skits. Following a delicious lunch, we had the opportunity to enhance our Japanese skills from our first morning class with other students. Later that afternoon, everyone got a chance to deepen their connection with others through various icebreakers. Closing the day, we divided into Han groups (smaller teams, each in charge of a key Academy job for all three weeks) and started preparation for the days to come!
Day one -- jitters, curiosity, and excitement! The staff and students met for the first time, and we planted the seeds for an amazing three week Academy. Students surely miss their families, but they've already begun to make new friends and learn new things, including how to write their names in katakana! Stay tuned to the blog, because soon reports will start coming straight from the students of the Academy Blog Team!
