Welcome Letter from the Director
Welcome to the Japanese Academy!
Dear Parents and Students,
Congratulations from the staff of the 2020 Virginia Governor’s Japanese Academy. We are all excited to have you at the Academy and cannot wait to welcome a new group of outstanding Japanese students this summer.
Our Academy has a tradition of providing an intensive yet exciting academic study of Japanese Language and culture. This is our 33rd year of the Academy, and it will be a unique year as we are going to conduct the program entirely online. All the classes will be conducted synchronously (live classes) and asynchronously (not a live class, but will include materials to prepare for the live classes). There are several exciting classes. The students will research about the Geography (Chiri in Japanese) of Japan through our Chihou Project. I introduced this project in the Welcome video so please refer to that video as well. You can also meet with each of the staff members in the staff introduction video. In addition to the language classes, our teachers are planning to provide some cultural classes, and the RAs are planning to lead Japanese music related classes. Additionally, we will be collaborating with Randolph-Macon College professors so that the Academy participants may study the culture of Japan from an array of perspectives. Regarding the language classes, we will be sending out a questionnaire using a Google form before you start the program to inform us which language level you are comfortable with. We will provide further instruction and information in a future email.
During this summer, we expect you to grow, learn, and expand your knowledge of and experiences with Japanese. The staff of the Academy are all here to support and help each one of you on your educational journey as you build a passion for Japanese studies. This being said, please come motivated and ready to challenge yourself, and never stop learning.
Please note that your comprehensive packet and guide for the academy will be posted by the end of the week of May 18th at our website http://www.vajapaneseacademy.com. This packet will include a list of how to prepare for the online academy, daily schedule, and more. Please make sure that both parents and students carefully read the entire packet to fully understand the Academy.
The Japanese Academy staff and I are thrilled to be meeting you and cannot wait to make this summer a lifelong memory for everyone. Good luck with the rest of your school year. Please contact me at VAJapaneseAcademy@gmail.com should you have any questions or concerns.
All the best,
Director, Governor’s Japanese Language Academy
